Is Nintendo Fixing the Switch Online Service?

Nintendo indicated that the company will continue to work on the Switch Online Service in their latest investor meeting.

It has now been a couple weeks since Nintendo launched the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. It seems that the reactions to the service has been mixed, with most of the reviews being negative. Most gamers agree that the convenience of being able to play N64 titles on the Switch is really cool, but the emulation leaves something to be desired. Most gamers probably won’t notice the issues, but there are some graphical glitches in some of the games and input lag on a couple titles.

There are countless articles and videos on the internet addressing the complaints that users have had with the service. And while Nintendo makes some questionable decisions, I’m sure they are aware of user experience issues that gamers are having with the service. The big questions is whether Nintendo will think it is worth it to fix the issues or not. With 32 million subscribers to the service (including both tiers), I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo were to consider it a success in spite of the noticeable problems.

However, in Nintendo’s latest investor strategy meeting, the company indicated that they will continue to improve the online service. Nintendo wrote, “Going forward, we will continue to improve and expand both Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack striving to provide services that satisfy consumers.”

It is nice to know that Nintendo hasn’t forgot about their customers, but I think they will really have to prove it to their user base. Nintendo has such an amazing legacy, but they have lost faith with some of their customers in recent years. Let’s hope that Nintendo will fix the issues with emulation on the Switch and continue to listen to their customers as we move further into the Switch’s lifespan.

Take Two Cancels Massive Game

Rockstar’s parent company, Take Two Interactive, just cancelled a game that $53 million had already been dumped into. They revealed this information in an earnings call earlier today. This isn’t the first time we have seen a big project like this cancelled, but $53 million is a lot of money any way you slice it.

The game was in development from studio Hangar 13 who developed Mafia 3. The project had the working title ‘Volt’ and was a third person action game that featured super heroes. So it probably was not the Bully 2 or Mafia 4 that people were speculating.

When you are dealing with massive AAA titles, $53 million is not nearly as much as the full budget would’ve been with some titles costing over $400 million. It sounds like this project had experienced a number of problems and adding the pandemic on top of that it had left it a bloated mess. This probably caused Take Two to just view it as a sunk cost, not worth continuing to invest in.

Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV Postponed

Coming as no huge surprise, Blizzard has more bad news for us as they announce that Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 will now be released later than expected.

The pandemic has really slowed down production not just for video games, but for all industries. We have seen countless movie releases pushed back and the global supply chain crisis has many products out of stock around the world. In recent years, we have seen a lot of games pushed back.

But to me this specific news doesn’t really come as a surprise. Blizzard has had a long string of controversies. The most recent being the studio facing a wide range of sexual harassment allegations and lawsuits. This has led to the studio being scrutinized by the public and key employees leaving in the midst of the game development process. Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 both lost their directors after news broke of the allegations.

There was no target date mentioned for the release of these games. So it is best to assume we probably won’t see Diablo IV or Overwatch 2 until 2023 at least.

Leaked Photos of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Series

HBO announced last year that they were taking on production of a series based the popular The Last of Us game developed by Naughty Dog. The game was released in 2013 and now 8 years later, we get to see it adapted to the big screen.

Starring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey and Gabriel Luna, the story follows the character Joel who is tasked with taking a young girl named Ellie across multiple states. Oh yeah, and this takes place 20 years after a massive fungal infection outbreak that more-or-less turns the infected into zombies. Having to dodge infected and violent organizations, Joel has to do what he can to help stop the spread and maybe reverse the outbreak.

The game details how the spread of this virus has to do with fungal growth. And the infected people look more and more like fungus at as the infection takes hold of their brain. In these leaked pictures, you can see the actors standing amidst fungal growth. The game is packed full of intense action and horror elements so I’m sure we will see both of those things present in the show.

This is definitely worth checking out while you can grab it as part of the PS Plus subscription.

First Class Trouble (PS4 & PS5)

First Class Trouble is a multiplayer party game that involves 6 players. While aboard a space cruiser, the players decide who among them is actually a human-like AI. 4 of the players will need to use deduction to decide who they can trust.

Kingdom of Amalur: Re-Reckoning (PS4)

Kingdom of Amular: Re-Reckoning is a remaster of a game from 2012 that originally released on XBOX 360, PS3, and PC. It is an Action RPG where you play as “The Fateless One” who sets out to solve the mystery of his own death. This is a vast game with plenty of fun RPG elements if thats your thing!

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners (PSVR)

This is a virtual reality survival/horror game based in the ruins of New Orleans. You fight off zombies and scavenge for materials to craft with. This is probably one of the more immersive games on PSVR. If you can, definitely check it out.

Sony State of Play – October 2021 Highlights

Today Sony aired their anticipated State of Play announcement and update event. The general response seems to be that people are a little disappointed in the announcements. This was all third party games, so no Sony AAA titles were announced. Among the announcements there were a few highlights.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach

In the latest installment of Five Nights at Freddy’s, you play as a little boy named Gregory who has to escape Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex after being trapped there overnight. Like the other games in the series, this is a survival horror game and you will have to use your wits to avoid the animatronics. This is one of the trailers that stuck out to me from todays ‘State of Play’.

Star Ocean The Divine Force

This year marks 25 years since the first installment of the Star Ocean series was released. The new installment, Star Ocean The Divine Force looks to have some serious depth based on the trailer. Players choices will affect events and outcomes in the game. There will be a solid list of characters to choose from and this game will have fast and intense action.

Death’s Door

Death’s Door by developer Acid Nerve is heading to Playstation consoles (and Switch) on November 23rd. Death’s Door is definitely one of the better indie games released this year and it will be a welcome addition to the consoles lineup. This game has been compared to the Zelda series. It is an action-adventure game where you play as a Crow who reaps souls for the ‘Reaping Commission Headquarters’ in the afterlife. It has a very unique art direction and offers simplicity that makes it easy to pick up and play.

This State of Play event didn’t blow up away gamers, but I am excited to check out a few of these titles.

People are Getting a Weird Green Tint on the Switch Oled

The new Switch Oled was released on October 8th. It was not quite the ‘Switch Pro’ that people were hoping for, but the reception seems to be decently positive. In general, the display looks better and the bigger screen is a nice addition, but whether the price is worth it or not is still up for debate.

However, as with all hardware launches, there have been some defects popping up. Some Oled users have taken to the internet to ask about a strange green tint that is appearing on their fancy new Oled screen. It is still uncertain how widespread this issue is, but it is definitely affecting some users.

u/BassyDave on Reddit detailed that at low brightness, the green haze is appears on the left edge of the screen. During gameplay it doesn’t seem to be as noticeable, but on a uniform color as shown below, the tint is especially bad.

u/yuri_hime commented on the thread and shared that this may not be a defect. This may be happening just due to the nature of how an Oled display works.

If you take the time to research this phenomenon, you find that all oled displays run the risk of having this problem. There are countless forum posts about oled tv screens and phone screens that experience the exact same problem. This is probably getting more attention because of the fiasco with the Switch Joy-Cons having drift issues. People are quick to assume that Nintendo is releasing another piece of hardware that has major potential for a defect.

GTA Trilogy Remaster Coming November 11 – New Trailer Released

The GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition was recently announced by Rockstar. Today we finally got a release date. The remastered trilogy will come to all major platforms for digital download on November 11. A physical release will be headed to Playstation, Switch, and Xbox on December 7th.

What we know so far is that these games will have certain quality of life improvements. There will be some improvements to textures, models, and overall resolution. We are finally able to see these visual improvements in the trailer that Rockstar shared this morning.

Rockstar has said that the games will control like GTA 5. That alone will be a massive improvement. On top of that, the aiming and lock on system will be improved. The Radio station selection system will also resemble the wheel that is used in GTA 5.

The Switch will have some exclusive controls with the addition of gyro aiming and touch screen camera controls. I’m sure if you don’t like the gyro controls, this is something that can be toggled off in settings.

We still haven’t heard anything about the radio stations and if any songs were removed or added. I speculated about this in a former article:

New Game, Haunted Chocolatier, Announced by Stardew Valley Creator

ConcernedApe (creator of Stardew Valley) took to twitter this afternoon to prepare us for a new announcement. Followers quickly took to the comments expressing their excitements and speculations.

It looks like we will be getting a brand new game from the beloved developer. It is called Haunted Chocolatier and it features the same 16-bit art style that we have come to love from Stardew Valley. We don’t know a lot about the game other than the mechanics appear to be very similar to Stardew. That and it appears to center around… Chocolate.

We were not given a release date yet. It is still in development, but this will be a fun game to look out for. I’m sure we will get more information down the line.

Switch Scalpers are at it Again (This Time With the Oled)

The only thing sure in life is death and taxes… and Nintendo scalpers.

Pretty much anytime Nintendo announces anything, scalpers start rubbing their hands together with dollar signs in their eyes… I’m mostly joking. The latest victim to fall into the hands of these scalpers is the new Switch Oled.

Yikes…

Scalpers already have the new Oled model of the Switch listed at over twice its retail value. This situation is undoubtedly helped by the pandemic and the resulting supply shortage. Less of these units on the shelf means a higher price that these scalpers can sell at.

Really the only thing regular customers can do to counter this is refuse to buy these models at such outrageous prices. The problem is that anything Nintendo holds its value really well. So even after buying a Switch Oled, worst case scenario for a would-be scalper would be to resell it at a incredibly small loss. This is a risk that they will continue to take…

The only thing sure in life is death and taxes… and Nintendo Scalpers.
